The First Credit Unions
The first credit union was created in 1909, after Massachusetts passed the first state credit union law. Since that date, most states have enacted credit union legislation. Credit unions were founded to encourage thrift among its membership and to make loans to this membership from accumulated savings. It is not operated at a profit like other financial institutions.
Purpose
Credit Unions encourage members to accumulate savings out of income as a means of building economic security for themselves and their families. They offer discounted loan rates and other free or low cost financial services that help members become financially responsible managers of their resources.
Services
Credit Unions provide low interest consumer loans, home equity loans and home mortgages which save members money. Other low cost or free financial services are available to members.
Founded
In June 1962 active military, retired military, and civil service employees affiliated with the Naval Auxiliary Air Station at Meridian founded the Meridian Naval Federal Credit Union. In October 1993, the name was changed to MUNA Federal Credit Union to reflect the uniting of the Meridian and Navy communities. In March of 1997, NCUA allowed us to change our charter to begin serving employees, residents and business within Lauderdale County as a community credit union. MUNA Federal has continued to serve this area for over 40 years. We have 20 years of experience in successfully providing checking privileges for our members.
MUNA Federal Membership
The credit union has grown from the original 10 charter members to more than 5,000 members. This diverse group began with retired and active military, retired and active U. S. Civil Service employees, contractors for NAS Meridian, and expanded to include Lauderdale County businesses and residents. Families of each member (anyone related by blood or marriage) also became a part of our membership base. We have members who have relocated since joining and we have met the challenge of providing services to our members who live throughout the United States and worldwide.
